VA2K Walk and Roll
Salisbury VA employees participate in VA2K Walk and Roll across campus to promote health and fitness while supporting our homeless Veterans.
The Salisbury VA Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC’s) in Charlotte and Winston-Salem hosted our first VA2K Walk and Roll event on June 2, 2011. The VA2K Walk and Roll was held at VA campuses across the country to promote health and fitness while supporting our homeless veterans. The Salisbury VAMC donated over a 1,000 of items to Rowan Helping Ministries. The Charlotte CBOC donated over $300 of items to Urban Ministries. The Winston-Salem CBOC donated over $350 of items to Rescue Mission in Winston-Salem. In turn, the cumulative 460 participants received a water bottle, pedometer, button, visor and the opportunity to walk 1.24 miles.
The VA2K Walk and Roll was held in June to promote Professional Wellness month, designed to recognize the importance of well being and help them live healthier lives. According to the 2010 Voice of the VA survey, 25 percent of employees do not participate in any structured exercise, and 59 percent do less than is recommended.
The employees at the CBOC’s and Salisbury VA Medical Center were encouraged to take a 30-minute walk to support homeless veterans. A health fair was on site at the Salisbury VAMC which offered information about weight management, nutrition, diabetes prevention and other topics.
