About the Clinic

The Advanced Low Vision Clinic provides vision rehabilitation to veterans with visual impairment, legal blindness, functional vision difficulty, and visual complications of traumatic brain injury. The clinic concentrates on patients with visual acuities ranging from 20/70 to legal blindness with or without visual field loss. The visual skills assessment and training is more extensive than that provided at the basic low vision clinics in the Winston-Salem and Charlotte VA Outpatient Clinics.

The Advanced Low Vision Clinic staff is composed of:

  • Eye doctors who specialize in low vision
  • A medical support assistant
  • A low vision therapist
  • An orientation and mobility specialist

Services provided by ALVC

The ALVC offers a full range of high-quality services by a team of professionals:

  • Optometrists: specialized low vision eye exams; prescription of optical & electronic devices
  • Certified Low Vision Therapist: teaches veterans to use vision with & without devices
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist: teaches veterans to walk about safely & efficiently
  • Vision Rehabilitation Therapists: instruct veterans in performing everyday tasks safely & efficiently
  • Psychosocial counseling for adjustment to low vision or blindness
