About the Clinic

The Advanced Low Vision Clinic provides vision rehabilitation to Veterans with visual impairment, legal blindness, functional vision difficulty, and visual complications of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is a Team clinic that brings together specialists from several related disciplines who typically work together with the same patient over the course of the same appointment. The visual assessment, training and resources available are more extensive than at the low vision clinics in the Kernersville Health Care Center and Charlotte Community Based Outpatient Clinic.

The Advanced Low Vision Clinic (ALVC) staff is composed of:

  • Eye doctors (Optometrists) who specialize in low vision and brain injury rehabilitation
  • A Medical Support Assistant
  • A Low Vision Therapist who also specializes in vision rehabilitation therapy
  • An Orientation and Mobility Specialist who also specializes in vision rehabilitation therapy

Services provided by ALVC

The ALVC offers a full range of high-quality services by a team of professionals:

  • Optometrist: provides special low vision eye exams intended to improve a Veteran’s use of their vision – whatever that may be, prescribes optical & electronic devices, and works closely with the other Team members to maximize a Veteran’s ability to use their remaining vision
  • Certified Low Vision Therapist: incorporates information from the other Team member’s work with a Veteran, further evaluates needs, helps identify the best options, and teaches a Veteran on the best ways to use vision with & without devices; participation by family members or significant others in this process is welcomed
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist: assesses a Veteran’s ability to walk about safely & efficiently, identifies adaptive devices to improve independence and safety, and teaches Veterans and family
  • Vision Rehabilitation Therapist: instructs Veterans in performing everyday tasks safely & efficiently including by incorporating adaptive devices and approaches
